John Gage
American computer scientist

John Gage, a retired computer scientist and technology executive, coined the phrase "The Network is the Computer" in 1984 while working at Sun Microsystems.

John Gage โ€“ Quick facts:

  • He was the 21st employee (and sometimes cited as the 5th) of Sun Microsystems.

  • The slogan became Sun Microsystems' primary tagline for decades, replacing "Open Systems for Open Minds."

  • The phrase is widely regarded as a truism of Silicon Valley, predicting the shift toward network-centric computing.

  • In 2019, Cloudflare acquired the expired trademark rights to the slogan to reflect its modern edge computing vision.

  • Gage served as Sun's vice president and chief researcher until 2008.

Although popularly attributed to Sun co-founder Scott McNealy, historical records and Gage himself confirm that he created the phrase. The concept originally described how desktop workstations would serve as the primary interface for accessing the immense computing power of networked supercomputers. Today, the phrase remains relevant in cloud computing, where the network itself provides the computational resources and storage previously held in local devices.

How important is it to learn networking?
20 years ago when most stuff was still analog, the major troubleshooting usually came down to cabling and electrical issues. Those are still big considerations, but I definitely spend more of my time troubleshooting IP addresses and network connectivity than anything else these days. I took the Cisco CCNA courses in high school and that background has helped immensely. I think a general Computer Science degree would be far more valuable than something specifically in Audio Production, but neither is actually required for most jobs in the industry. I highly recommend taking some courses though if they're available to you More on reddit.com

18 November 2012 - John made the observation that importance of the network was growing at an exponential rate and he wanted to reflect that in the title of his upcoming talk. Initially, John said that โ€œthe network is the disk driveโ€, to which Bill, replied that the phrase did not capture his talk. John then came up with, โ€œthe network is the computerโ€, and that was used for the talk and became Sunโ€™s famous tag line.
